“Wicked” is coming to Middlesex Community College. Middlesex is thrilled to air the Oscar-nominated film at the college’s new Owl Theatre, located in MCC’s Richard and Nancy Donahue and Family Academic Arts Center (AAC) in Lowell. With festivities beginning at 6 p.m., the film will start at 7 p.m. on Friday, February 28.
“There is no better film option to debut at our Owl Theatre than the incredibly ‘popular’ and award-winning ‘Wicked,’” said Phil Sisson, MCC’s President. “We are excited for the community to come together at our historic Academic Arts Center to enjoy a movie musical experience featuring some of their favorite songs. This is the first of many opportunities to watch films on the big screen at MCC, ranging from cult classics to Oscar winners, and much more. We hope to see you there!”
With “Wicked,” the college is showcasing a buzzworthy film for its first offering
on Oscar weekend. Through providing a variety of fun and relevant film options and community
entertainment to Greater Lowell, Middlesex is proud to honor the legacy of the city’s
beloved Luna Theater from Mill No. 5.
MCC also celebrates the original Owl Theatre, which opened as one of Lowell’s first movie theaters in 1913 in the same space as the AAC. The main attraction of the building, The Owl Theatre aired the top motion pictures of the time. In 1920, the theatre became the Rialto to continue bringing movies to the area. The kick-off of MCC’s theatre will include a throwback to the initial opening night of The Owl in December 1913.
“MCC’s new version of The Owl Theatre is a fantastic opportunity to go back to the building and our community’s roots to one of the first uses of the space,” said Patrick Cook, MCC’s Vice President of Administration. “Tying in the college’s owl mascot to this original concept is a perfect fit, while maintaining a wonderful community tradition established so successfully by the Luna Theater for so many years. Though only here for ‘one short day’ at MCC, we know ‘Wicked’ is going to have us all ‘dancing through life’ at The Owl.”
During MCC’s event, attendees will be able to buy popcorn, receive giveaways, and have the chance to walk the red carpet. In addition to getting their picture taken with MCC’s owl mascot Swoops, attendees will be able to spot the Luna Theater’s signature moon statue.
Limited tickets are available for $5. Tickets must be purchased in advance. Buy tickets and learn more about The Owl Theatre!
Conversations are already underway between MCC and other community partners looking
to showcase films in the space in the coming months. Stay tuned for more announcements
