An international student from Malawi, Africa, Risha Patel came to Middlesex Community College to start her college education. Interested in pursuing a STEM (science, technology, engineering, mathematics) field, she chose to study computer science. Although she was nervous at the beginning of her journey, she has become more confident as she earns her degree and participates in the MCC community.

“Over time, MCC helped me become more comfortable, independent and confident,” Patel said. “I’ve also had opportunities outside the classroom that helped me grow as a student and as a person. Moving to the U.S. for college as an international student has given me the experience of adjusting to a completely new environment while also staying connected to my background and culture.”

When choosing a program of study, Patel wanted a subject that provided a variety of opportunities for her future. Computer science allows her to explore math and technology, as well as solve problems. In MCC’s program, she is excited to work hands-on to apply what she is learning in the classroom to real-world experiences. She is also able to develop her logical-thinking skills.

Even when the work feels difficult, Patel is proud to keep trying when something does not work the first time. For helping her be successful, she is grateful to Middlesex faculty and staff members for offering their support. They also encouraged her to accept more opportunities outside of the classroom, including working as a STEM peer tutor and student leader for the college’s Academic Centers for Enrichment (ACE).

“Their support helped me realize that I was capable of doing more than just focusing on my classes,” Patel said. “Through my classes, tutoring, and leadership experiences, I have learned about problem-solving, communication, teamwork and responsibility. I believe these experiences will help me as I transfer to a four-year university and eventually enter my professional career.”

For two years, Patel has served as President of MCC’s International Student Club. Understanding what it is like to come to a new country and not know many people, the club is important to her. She enjoys creating a welcoming environment for international students to meet people, share their cultures, and feel more connected to MCC.

At the Fall 2026 Scholarship Ceremony, Patel will receive the Markowicz-Dundorf Scholarship awarded to female students studying a STEM field. She is also one of four recipients of President Phil Sisson’s Presidential Promise Scholarship. The scholarship helps students achieve their dream of a college education and provides funds to close their financial aid gaps in expenses related to completing their Middlesex program.

“Receiving a scholarship means a lot to me because it is recognition of the work I have put into my education and my involvement at MCC,” Patel said. “As an international student, continuing my education in the U.S. is a big opportunity, and financial support makes that journey easier.”

Patel credits MCC for helping her grow on an academic, professional and personal level. After graduating, her goal is to transfer to a four-year university to earn a bachelor’s degree and build on the foundation in STEM and leadership she started at Middlesex.

“When I first came here, I was shy, and it took me time to become comfortable speaking to new people and getting involved,” she said. “Now, I am a student leader, a tutor, and the President of the International Student Club. I am so proud of how much I have grown, and I am grateful to MCC for giving me opportunities to step outside of my comfort zone.”
