At Middlesex Community College’s 2023 Evening of Excellence Awards, Matthew Dunham, of Stoneham, received the Outstanding Achievement in Entrepreneurship award. Graduating with highest honors, he earned an associate degree in Business Administration and a certificate in Hospitality Management – Culinary Arts.

“It meant a lot to me to win this year,” Dunham said. “I enjoyed taking Introduction to Entrepreneurship with Professor Stacie Hargis. I worked very hard in class and it was so nice to be recognized.”

In the Fall, he will transfer to Johnson and Wales University to study baking and pastry arts. An internship with Piro’s Bakery in Methuen helped confirm for Dunham that he was on the right career path. He spent his internship in the decorating department, learning new techniques to work on cakes, cupcakes and other pastry products.

Dunham came to MCC because the college had a great reputation and affordable prices to start off his academic career. In small class sizes, he formed connections with classmates and professors who helped him feel more comfortable and welcomed at the college.

He also found the subjects of what he was learning and doing in class to be “interesting and exciting.” Professors such as MCC Hospitality and Culinary Arts Program Coordinator Kim Morrissey and Chef Instructor Jim Giordano taught Dunham firsthand knowledge of what it is like working in the industry.

His interest in culinary arts and hospitality stems from the fulfilling nature of the job and the endless opportunities available to him in the field. Dunham believes his education from MCC has helped him get on track to reach his goal of one day becoming a pastry chef.

“I have gained knowledge and experience that will help me in my next chapter of education and my future career position,” he said. “My overall experience at MCC was wonderful.”
